Eclipses 2027: dates, times and zodiac signs

There are five eclipses in 2027, two solar and three lunar. The solar eclipses are the annular eclipse of February 6 and the total eclipse of August 2. Below are the exact times, the sign and degree of each eclipse, the lunar node it falls near and what astrologers associate it with.

Times are shown in UTC.

Every 2027 eclipse in detail

1. February 6: Annular solar eclipse in Aquarius

  • Greatest eclipse: February 6 at 15:59 UTC (Feb 6, 10:59 AM EST)
  • Sun and Moon at 17°38′ Aquarius
  • 2.9° from the North Node (20°32′ Aquarius)

In an annular solar eclipse the Moon is far enough from Earth that it looks slightly smaller than the Sun, so it cannot cover the Sun completely. Along the central path a ring of sunlight stays visible around the Moon; elsewhere the eclipse is partial.

A solar eclipse in Aquarius is linked with friends, groups, causes and hopes for the future. Aquarius is fixed air ruled by Saturn, with Uranus as its modern ruler, so astrologers see this eclipse reshaping your social world: a new circle, a shared project, or a goal that only makes sense once you include other people in it.

2. February 20: Penumbral lunar eclipse in Virgo

  • Greatest eclipse: February 20 at 23:12 UTC (Feb 20, 6:12 PM EST)
  • Moon at 2°05′ Virgo, opposite the Sun at 2°05′ Pisces
  • 11.5° from the South Node (20°34′ Leo)
  • Penumbral magnitude about 0.92: the share of the Moon’s diameter inside the outer shadow at its deepest
  • The full moon of February 20, the Snow Moon (full moon calendar 2027)

In a penumbral lunar eclipse the Moon passes only through Earth’s faint outer shadow, the penumbra. The full moon dims slightly, often so little that casual observers do not notice.

With the Moon in Virgo and the Sun in Pisces, a lunar eclipse falls on the axis of order and surrender. Astrologers associate it with a turning point in work, routines and health habits: a job or system that has run its course, or a realization that perfect planning cannot cover everything. Letting go of one duty can make room for another.

3. July 18: Penumbral lunar eclipse in Capricorn

  • Greatest eclipse: July 18 at 16:03 UTC (Jul 18, 12:03 PM EDT)
  • Moon at 25°49′ Capricorn, opposite the Sun at 25°49′ Cancer
  • 15.7° from the North Node (11°29′ Aquarius)
  • The Moon only grazes the edge of Earth’s outer shadow, so the dimming is far too slight to see
  • The full moon of July 18, the Buck Moon (full moon calendar 2027)

In a penumbral lunar eclipse the Moon passes only through Earth’s faint outer shadow, the penumbra. The full moon dims slightly, often so little that casual observers do not notice.

With the Moon in Capricorn and the Sun in Cancer, a lunar eclipse falls on the axis of public and private life. Astrologers associate it with a culmination in career and responsibilities: a project completed, a role that ends, or a recognition that your ambitions and your need for rest have to be weighed against each other.

4. August 2: Total solar eclipse in Leo

  • Greatest eclipse: August 2 at 10:07 UTC (Aug 2, 6:07 AM EDT)
  • Sun and Moon at 9°55′ Leo
  • 1.6° from the South Node (11°30′ Leo)

In a total solar eclipse the Moon covers the whole disc of the Sun along a narrow path on Earth’s surface, and the sky turns dark for a few minutes. On either side of that path, people see a partial eclipse.

A solar eclipse in Leo falls in the Sun’s own sign, so tradition gives it a strong personal flavor. Leo is fixed fire, and its themes are creativity, romance, children, play and the wish to be seen. Astrologers read the eclipse as a start in one of those areas: a creative project, a love story or a bolder way of showing who you are.

5. August 17: Penumbral lunar eclipse in Aquarius

  • Greatest eclipse: August 17 at 07:14 UTC (Aug 17, 3:14 AM EDT)
  • Moon at 24°11′ Aquarius, opposite the Sun at 24°11′ Leo
  • 12.6° from the North Node (11°33′ Aquarius)
  • Penumbral magnitude about 0.54: the share of the Moon’s diameter inside the outer shadow at its deepest
  • The full moon of August 17, the Sturgeon Moon (full moon calendar 2027)

In a penumbral lunar eclipse the Moon passes only through Earth’s faint outer shadow, the penumbra. The full moon dims slightly, often so little that casual observers do not notice.

A lunar eclipse in Aquarius, with the Sun in Leo, falls on the axis of the individual and the group. Astrologers read it as a turning point in friendships, communities and long-term hopes. A group you belong to may change, or you may see that a goal you shared with others no longer fits the person you are becoming.

Eclipse seasons in 2027

Eclipses happen only when a new or full moon falls close to the lunar nodes, which in practice means within about two and a half weeks of the Sun crossing a node. The nodes move backward through the zodiac, so these windows come a little earlier every year. In 2027 the eclipses group around these passages of the Sun:

  • Sun on the North Node, February 9: annular solar eclipse on February 6 (3 days before), penumbral lunar eclipse on February 20 (11 days after).
  • Sun on the South Node, August 4: penumbral lunar eclipse on July 18 (16 days before), total solar eclipse on August 2 (2 days before), penumbral lunar eclipse on August 17 (13 days after).

The nodal axis decides which signs host the eclipses. Astrologers often read eclipses near the North Node as openings and eclipses near the South Node as releases, though most also judge each one by the sign and house it falls in. See the North Node calculator for where the nodes sit in your own chart.

Which house the 2027 eclipses fall in for your sign

In a Sun-sign reading your sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. If you know your rising sign, read the row for that sign as well. Astrologers treat the houses the eclipses fall in as the parts of life most open to change this year.

What eclipses mean in astrology

A solar eclipse is a new moon that falls close to a lunar node, so the Moon passes in front of the Sun. A lunar eclipse is a full moon near a node, when the Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon. Astrologers have long treated eclipses as stronger versions of the new and full moons: a solar eclipse as a beginning that may arrive suddenly, a lunar eclipse as a culmination or an ending that has been building for a while. Many astrologers suggest watching the weeks around an eclipse instead of the day itself, and advise against treating any single date as a fixed prediction.

How the dates are calculated

The eclipses are worked out with the method in Jean Meeus’s Astronomical Algorithms and checked against NASA’s eclipse catalog: every eclipse from 2020 to 2030 is found on the right date and with the right type, and the times of greatest eclipse checked so far are within ten minutes of NASA’s. Zodiac positions and the true lunar node come from the same engine as our birth chart calculator. Where each eclipse can be seen depends on your location; NASA’s eclipse website publishes visibility maps.

Questions

How many eclipses are there in 2027?

Five: two solar and three lunar. In order, annular solar eclipse on February 6 in Aquarius, penumbral lunar eclipse on February 20 in Virgo, penumbral lunar eclipse on July 18 in Capricorn, total solar eclipse on August 2 in Leo, penumbral lunar eclipse on August 17 in Aquarius.

What signs are the 2027 eclipses in?

Aquarius, Virgo, Capricorn and Leo. A solar eclipse falls in the sign of the Sun and Moon together; a lunar eclipse falls in the Moon’s sign, opposite the Sun. Astrologers read the houses these signs occupy in your chart as the areas of life the eclipses touch.

Why do eclipses come in pairs?

Eclipses can only happen when the Sun is close to one of the lunar nodes, the two points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s. The window around each of the Sun’s node crossings lasts a little over a month, so there is room for a new moon and a full moon, and sometimes a third lunation, in each of these eclipse seasons. They come about every six months.

Which time zone are the dates in?

The table switches to your own time zone in the browser. The text gives UTC with US Eastern time alongside. An eclipse is a single moment, so its local date can differ by a day around the world.

Is it safe to look at a solar eclipse?

Only with proper eye protection made for viewing the Sun, such as certified eclipse glasses or a solar filter. Ordinary sunglasses are not enough. Lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye.
