What moon phase was I born under?

Find the Moon phase on your birthday, or any date from 1900 to 2099: the phase name, how much of the Moon was lit, its age in days, your astrological lunation type and the Moon’s sign.

The date alone is enough for the phase. Add a time and place for the exact percentage and Moon sign.

The eight moon phases

New Moon
The Moon is between Earth and the Sun, so its sunlit side faces away from us and it is almost invisible.
Waxing Crescent
A thin, growing sliver is visible in the evening sky after sunset.
First Quarter
Half of the disc is lit, on the right as seen from the Northern Hemisphere. The Moon is high at sunset.
Waxing Gibbous
More than half is lit and growing, as the Moon heads toward full.
Full Moon
The Moon is opposite the Sun, fully lit and rising around sunset.
Waning Gibbous
Still mostly lit but shrinking, rising later each night.
Last Quarter
Half lit again, on the left from the Northern Hemisphere, and highest around sunrise.
Waning Crescent
A thin sliver in the morning sky before sunrise, shrinking toward the next New Moon.

Your lunation type in astrology

The astrologer Dane Rudhyar divided the Moon’s cycle into eight equal phases of 45 degrees, counted from the New Moon. Your birth phase, or lunation type, is read as the basic rhythm of your personality: whether you tend to start things, build them, share them or let them go.

New Moon 0°–45°
Born in the New Moon phase, you are associated with instinct, fresh starts and acting on impulse. Astrologers describe this type as projecting yourself into life before you fully know where you are going, and learning by doing.
Crescent 45°–90°
Crescent Moon people are linked with effort and determination: pushing new ideas forward against the pull of habit and the past. There is often a sense of having to prove that something new can work.
First Quarter 90°–135°
The First Quarter type is associated with action in a crisis: building, deciding and clearing away what is in the way. Astrologers see a strong will and a need for challenges to rise to.
Gibbous 135°–180°
Gibbous Moon people are linked with refinement and purpose: analyzing, improving and asking what something is for. This type is described as a seeker who wants to perfect a skill or understand a meaning.
Full Moon 180°–225°
Born at the Full Moon, you are associated with awareness, relationships and seeing things clearly. Astrologers describe this type as finding fulfilment through other people and through bringing ideas fully into the open.
Disseminating 225°–270°
The Disseminating type is linked with sharing what you know: teaching, spreading ideas and putting experience into words. Astrologers see a natural communicator who wants to pass something on.
Last Quarter 270°–315°
Last Quarter people are associated with a crisis of consciousness: questioning old structures, turning away from what no longer fits and quietly reorienting. This type is described as principled and forward-looking.
Balsamic 315°–360°
Born in the Balsamic phase, the last sliver before the New Moon, you are linked with endings, intuition and the future. Astrologers describe this type as visionary, often feeling like a bridge between one cycle and the next.

How it is calculated

The phase comes from the elongation, the angle between the Moon and the Sun along the zodiac, using the same positions as our birth chart calculator. Exact New, Full and Quarter Moon times match the Swiss Ephemeris within two minutes.

Questions

What moon phase was I born under?

Enter your birth date above. The calculator works out the angle between the Moon and the Sun at that moment, which fixes the phase, how much of the Moon was lit and how many days had passed since the last New Moon.

What is the difference between the moon phase and the lunation type?

The phase name (crescent, gibbous and so on) describes what the Moon looked like. The lunation type is an astrological reading of the same angle, splitting the cycle into eight equal parts of 45 degrees, as described by the astrologer Dane Rudhyar.

Does my time zone matter?

Slightly. The Moon’s phase changes by about 12 degrees a day, so a date on the other side of the world can shift the percentage a little and, near a quarter or full moon, the phase name. Add your birth place to use the exact local moment.
