The 1st house in astrology

The 1st house is the part of the chart that begins at the Ascendant, the degree rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. Astrologers read it as you in the most direct sense: your body, your manner, your first reactions and the impression you make before anyone knows you well.

What the 1st house rules

This house covers the self as others first meet it. Appearance, physical presence, temperament and the way you start things all belong here. If someone describes you after five minutes, they are describing your 1st house more than your Sun sign. It also stands for beginnings in general, so astrologers look at it for how you handle fresh starts and new places. Planets here color your whole personality, because whatever sits on the Ascendant is visible in almost everything you do. A quiet 1st house does not mean a weak sense of self; the sign on the cusp and its ruler then carry the story.

Natural sign and ruler

In the natural zodiac, which pairs each house with a sign in order, the 1st house matches Aries and its ruler Mars. The link fits: Aries is the first sign and the 1st house is the first house, and both are about initiative, independence and stepping forward. Your own 1st house is ruled by whatever sign was rising, so a Cancer rising reads it through the Moon.

An angular house

Angular houses (the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th) begin at the four angles of the chart: the Ascendant, the IC, the Descendant and the Midheaven. Astrologers read them as the strongest and most visible houses, where planets act openly. As the first angular house, it is one of the four strongest places in the chart, and the Ascendant at its cusp is the most personal point of all.

Planets in the 1st house

A planet in the 1st house tends to show on the surface. The Sun here often gives a strong, recognizable presence; the Moon makes moods easy to read on your face. Mercury rejoices here in traditional astrology, so a quick, talkative manner is a classic reading. Mars can add speed and directness, Saturn a serious or reserved first impression, Venus charm and an eye for appearance. Planets close to the Ascendant degree count most.

Your 1st house sign by rising sign

The sign on your 1st house cusp depends on your rising sign. It is the rising sign itself in every house system, because the 1st house cusp is the Ascendant.

How big is the 1st house?

In Whole Sign and Equal houses every house spans exactly 30°. In Placidus, the system most software uses, house sizes change with your birth time and grow more uneven the further you were born from the equator. In New York the 1st house ranges from 20° to 48°; in London from 16° to 61°. When a house is wider than a sign, it can hold a whole sign that touches neither cusp, an intercepted sign, which some astrologers read as a theme that takes longer to express.

How to find your 1st house

You need your birth date, exact time and place. Enter them in the birth chart calculator and look at the house list: it shows the sign on the 1st house cusp and any planets inside it. Then find the planet that rules that sign and see which house it sits in. That planet, the 1st house ruler, is where astrologers say 1st house matters lead you.

Questions

What does the 1st house represent in astrology?

The 1st house represents the self: your body, appearance, temperament and the first impression you make. It begins at the Ascendant, so it describes how you meet the world and start new things. Astrologers read it as one of the most personal parts of the chart, alongside the Sun and Moon.

Is the 1st house the same as the rising sign?

They are closely related. The rising sign is the sign on the Ascendant, the cusp of the 1st house. In Whole Sign houses the entire rising sign is the 1st house. In Placidus and other quadrant systems the 1st house starts at the exact Ascendant degree and can run into the next sign.

Which planet rules the 1st house?

In the natural zodiac the 1st house is paired with Aries, so its natural ruler is Mars. In your own chart, the ruler of your 1st house is the planet that rules the sign on its cusp, and astrologers read where that planet sits to see where 1st house matters lead.
