What the 3rd house rules
This house rules how you think and speak in daily life, from messages and notes to the way you explain an idea. Early education belongs here, as do brothers, sisters, cousins and the people next door. Short trips, commuting and getting around your area are 3rd house matters too. Where the 9th house deals with big ideas and long distances, the 3rd deals with practical knowledge and the familiar route. Planets here describe your curiosity, your writing and speaking style and your relationship with siblings. In traditional astrology it was also connected with religious rites and the goddess, because the Moon finds its joy here.
Natural sign and ruler
In the natural zodiac the 3rd house corresponds to Gemini and its ruler Mercury, the sign of the twins and the planet of messages. The pairing fits a house about siblings, talk and quick exchanges. Your own 3rd house cusp may hold a very different sign, which then sets the tone of your communication.
A cadent house
Cadent houses (the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th) “fall away” from the angles. Astrologers link them with learning, adjustment and transition, and traditionally saw planets here as less able to act directly. As a cadent house, it falls away from the angular 4th and is about learning, adjusting and passing information along.
Planets in the 3rd house
The Moon rejoices in the 3rd house in traditional astrology, and astrologers often read it as a mind tuned to feelings and a close bond with siblings or the local scene. Mercury here sharpens speech and writing. Mars can make you blunt or quick to argue, Venus pleasant and diplomatic in conversation. Saturn may slow early learning or bring a careful, exact way of speaking, and Jupiter a talent for teaching.

Your 3rd house sign by rising sign
The sign on your 3rd house cusp depends on your rising sign. In Whole Sign and Equal houses it is always the sign two signs after your rising sign, as in this table. In Placidus and other quadrant systems it is often the same sign, but it can differ, especially for births far from the equator.
