What the 4th house rules
This house covers home in every sense: the place you live, the household you grew up in, family history and the land or property you hold. Traditional astrologers also gave it the end of life and the final outcome of matters, since it is the foundation everything rests on. One parent belongs here as well. Older texts usually gave the 4th to the father and the 10th to the mother, while many modern astrologers give the 4th to the parent who nurtured you more; practice varies. Planets here describe what you need to feel at home and how family patterns shaped you. It is the most private of the four angles.
Natural sign and ruler
The 4th house matches Cancer and its ruler, the Moon, in the natural zodiac. Both are about nurture, memory and shelter. In your own chart the sign on the IC and its ruler tell you more about your home life than Cancer does, especially if a planet sits close to the cusp.
An angular house
Angular houses (the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th) begin at the four angles of the chart: the Ascendant, the IC, the Descendant and the Midheaven. Astrologers read them as the strongest and most visible houses, where planets act openly. As an angular house, it is one of the four pillars of the chart, quiet in public but strong in private life.
Planets in the 4th house
The Moon here is at home in both senses, and astrologers read a strong attachment to family and a need for a settled base. Saturn can point to early responsibility at home or a serious family atmosphere, Jupiter to a large or generous household. Uranus here is often read as frequent moves or an unusual home life. Venus likes a beautiful living space, and the Sun may make home and family central to identity.

Your 4th house sign by rising sign
The sign on your 4th house cusp depends on your rising sign. In Whole Sign and Equal houses it is always the sign three signs after your rising sign, as in this table. In Placidus and other quadrant systems it is often the same sign, but it can differ, especially for births far from the equator.
