What the 8th house rules
Where the 2nd house is your own money, the 8th is other people’s: a partner’s income, loans, taxes, insurance, legacies and anything held in common. Traditional astrologers also gave it death, which modern readers usually interpret as endings, letting go and transformation, not a prediction. Emotional and physical intimacy belong here, along with trust, secrets, research and the urge to understand what lies under the surface. Planets in the 8th describe how you handle shared resources and power in close bonds, and how you go through endings. It is an intense house, and many astrologers see real strength in it.
Natural sign and ruler
The 8th house matches Scorpio in the natural zodiac. Traditionally Scorpio is ruled by Mars; modern astrologers add Pluto. Scorpio’s depth, privacy and refusal to stay on the surface fit a house of intimacy and transformation. The sign on your own 8th house cusp shows how you approach trust and shared matters.
A succedent house
Succedent houses (the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th) follow the angular houses. Their name means “following”, and astrologers link them with resources, stability and what grows out of the angles. As a succedent house, it follows the angular 7th: after a partnership forms, shared money, trust and intimacy follow.
Planets in the 8th house
Pluto, the modern co-ruler, is read here as intensity and a drive to get to the bottom of things. Saturn may bring caution with debt and shared money or a slow build of trust. Jupiter is a traditional sign of benefit through others, such as a partner’s resources. Venus and Mars often point to strong attraction and depth in intimacy, and the Moon to deep emotional bonds.

Your 8th house sign by rising sign
The sign on your 8th house cusp depends on your rising sign. In Whole Sign and Equal houses it is always the sign seven signs after your rising sign, as in this table. In Placidus and other quadrant systems it is often the same sign, but it can differ, especially for births far from the equator.
